Performances and installation, during the 11th Annual Art Under the Bridge Festival
Duron Jackson: "Five Men" and
Rashaad Newsome: "Shade Compositions"
Friday, September 28, 2007.
For the 11th Dumbo Art Under the Bridge Festival, curator Felicity Hogan brings together two artists, Rashaad Newsome and Duron Jackson, who are connected through their exploration of issues concerning the role of black identity within popular culture and current society.
Three projects during the 10th annual art under the bridge festival presented by Dumbo Arts Center, October 13-15, 2006
Limo/Lame-O
A performance by Chad Stayrook
featuring: ChadWOW!, Lance Strongheart, and FRUTIGER.
Join artstars chadWOW!, Lance Strongheart, and FRUTIGER in an indulgent limo party touring the D.U.M.B.O. area. Featuring beautiful people, champagne
and strawberries, and video art, inspired by the wonder, wow, excess, and eccentricities of living the life.
Marker
A performance by Mary Coble
In Marker, Washington D.C. performance artist Mary Coble expands the focus of her previous performance, Note to Self (2005) which dealt with the issues
surrounding GLBT (Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender) victims murdered in hate crimes. The artist now invites viewers to evoke these assaults by penning
hateful epithets such as "dyke" or "faggot" on her body.
Coble anticipates that by granting her audience the permission to express themselves in relation to this subject matter, may elicit emotional discomfort
or perhaps will instigate "a larger community of people assisting in collective history of the 'reclaiming' of these words."
Adaptations
(recent video works) by José Ruiz
In an interior space in DUMBO, artist José Ruiz will present three action-based videos, Playing the Field, Ghost Signatures & Minimalist Graffiti
and Black Hole. These works stem from Ruiz's ongoing fascination with the division of labor and the abundance of cultural signifiers that shape our society.
